CouMediation is a practical method for helping other people resolve their conflicts and attain mutually satisfactory outcomes. This course introduces the concepts, skills and techniques needed to mediate disputes, such as determining whether mediation is appropriate, the role of the mediator, guiding the process, managing emotions and using communication skills as a mediator. Participants will have opportunities to mediate simulated disputes involving co-workers, customers, committee members, neighbours, parents/teens and co-parents. Emphasis is on skill development through simulated mediations assisted by trained coaches. Students are encouraged to bring a VHS videotape to record their role-play on the final day of the course. Some Do's and Don'ts of Effective Third Party Intervention Prerequisite(s): Either CR110A or CR110B; CR260 recommended Justice Institute of British Columbia Calendar
